Wimbledon 2008…. « And the Winner is… »

The third Grand Slam of the year is about to begin and their Champions don’t seem on top of their game:

Venus Williams struggles to play well this season. The 27-year-old hasn’t won a single title. At the Australian Open, she lost to Ana Ivanovic in the quaterfinals. She made it to the finals in Bangalore losing to her sister Serena; made a quaterfinal finish in Rome, falling to Jelena Jankovic; and was ousted in the third round of the French Open by Flavia Pennetta. Quite disappointing so far for a Champion like Venus, but Wimbledon is special for her, She has won 4 times and reached 6 finals in 7 years…it’s useless saying that she is the best player on grass on tour those last years. I hope that she will be able to do it again but competition is ready:

Ana Ivanovic, French Open new queen , will be seeded number 1 for the first time of her career, making her a favourite for the tournament. No one really knows what she’s capable of on grass…we’ll see. What is for sure is that her game fits the surface: speed, groundstrokes from the baseline, powerful…she is a potential winner.

Maria Sharapova was revealed on grass, so her eagerness to do well on that surface is not questioned. She will be ready to play, and no one doubts on her ability to get that title for the second time.

Serena Williams is another big potential winner. She won there twice back-to-back (2002,2003). Her thirst for victory is just dangerous for her opponents. When her game is on, she’s unbeatable, just like her sister. It’s been a long time since she has won Wimbledon…therefore, she will try to get a third Wimbledon crown. If someone can do it on tour, it’s her.

Jelena Jankovic fell to French player Marion Bartoli in the quaterfinals last year, can she make it in Wimbledon? She will have first to outplay the big hitters (Sharapova,Williams sisters,Ivanovic,Davenport…) whose game fit better the surface than hers. But she’s a fighter, she won on grass last year in Birmigham downing Maria Sharapova in the last round. If she can beat Sharapova on grass…why not Wimbledon this year for her?

In the men’s tour, Roger Federer will have to pay attention to Nadal’s frightening evolution on grass! Remember last year in the finals, Nadal bended over only in the 5th set to give victory to the swiss! Critics say that Nadal is closer to win Wimbledon than Federer is to win the French Open… It can be true if Nadal keeps on developing his game on this surface but we are not there yet…Federer will be more than ready to win a 6th Wimbledon title especially after his whitewash at the French Open Final. Other players have their chances but in today’s male tennis, there is Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and the rest….
